For example, if the person is a victim of a murder and the killer hasn't been caught, the victim's spirit may return to reveal the murderer or exact some type of personal revenge against the attacker.
A ghost that is seeking revenge may appear at the scene of the crime until someone living understands that foul play may have occurred. The spirit may also make itself known to someone it knew and trusted while alive in order to get assistance in seeking that justice is served.

They may also act in the same manner as a poltergeist and throw objects around rooms, slam doors and so on. In extreme cases, they can go much further. They can push people down stairs, in front of cars, or find anyway possible to cause physical harm and or emotional suffering to the person they feel has wronged them.
When a vengeful spirit goes as far as to try and harm someone physically, it wouldn't be uncommon for this type of spirit to be mistaken for a demon.
Ghosts out for revenge only have one goal and that's to make life miserable as possible for the person or people who, for whatever reason, feel they deserve it.
