Overtoun Bridge's Curious 'Dog Suicides'

"Posted: 21 Nov 2011 12:34 PM PST
In the Fall of 2010 it seemed pretty creepy that thousands of dead birds had fallen from the sky, millions of dead fish were turning up, and tens of thousands of dead crabs were littering beaches. But it turns out these aren't the only bizarre mass animal deaths that have occurred over the years. The most bizarre, IMO, has occurred at Scotland's Overtoun Bridge, located near the village of Milton in the burgh of Dumbarton.

In the past fifty years, 50 to 600 dogs have jumped over Scotland’s Overtoun Bridge and plummeted to their deaths. A few years ago, five dogs jumped in under six months. The Daily Mail wrote an article featuring reports of horrified pet owners who walked their dog over the bridge, when suddenly the dog would, without warning, leap over the bridge, falling 50 ft to the rocky bottom below. Perhaps even more disturbing, there are reports of “second timers”...of the few dogs who have survived the fall, some jumped over the same bridge again.
Many theories have circulated about why dogs react this way to the bridge. Some suggest that the dogs are deliberately committing suicide, perhaps due to depression in their owners or even a supernatural force.

Most of the dogs were long-nosed breeds; Labradors, Collies and Retrievers. Dog deaths have occurred in every season, but notably, on clear days, a rarity in this grey, wet part of Scotland. All of the dogs leapt from the same side of the bridge.
The most logical theory would seem to indicate something with the 'scent' at the bridge. RSPB researcher David Sexton planted several traps under the bridge and found mice and mink living there, and many squirrel nests nearby. He isolated the three animals’ scents and placed samples of each in a large field. He then unleashed ten dogs of the same breeds that routinely jump from the bridge. Only two dogs showed no interest in any of the scents...while seven of the dogs immediately went for the scent of the mink. In fact, it seemed that they were driven crazy by it.

So it may be that the smell of mink is irresistible to dogs, and not knowing about the 50 foot drop from the bridge, simply go wild and jump when they get a sniff of the scent. This would also explain why the “suicides” only \seem to happen to clear days, when the mink scent is undiluted by rain. It also lines up nicely with the timeline for mink populations in Scotland. The animals were only released into the wild in Scotland in the 1920s, and only began breeding in large numbers in the 1950s.

But there’s still the matter of why some dogs, once they’re on the ground after their jump, often go back up the bridge and jump again instead of chasing the mink. Or why the dogs only seem to jump from one specific point of the bridge and not others. Or why dogs go crazy for mink only here, when there are an estimated 26,000 mink all over Scotland?

According to legend, this is a place of dark deeds, tragedy and superstition. On one occasion, a man, behaving very erratically, threw his young baby from the bridge, believing it to be possessed by the devil.

In recent years the number of deaths has risen dramatically, with five animals jumping in six months. The story continues to attract widespread media attention, giving rise to the theory that these dogs could be committing suicide.

Overtoun House and it's grounds have garnered a reputation as a centre for unexplained phenomena. In Celtic mythology, Overtoun is known as a "thin" place. A place where Heaven and Earth are reputed to be close. Some have speculated that sensitive dogs are being spooked by something at the bridge."

Demon Dog of Valle Crucis.

Being a NC Resident.I love to hear the stories of the area. Here is one from Lon:

"A few of my relatives were raised in the North Carolina mountains. There were a lot of stories that came out of the region but the one tale that each one knew the best was that of the demon dog of Valle Crucis. The community of Valle Crucis, which is Latin for "Vale of the Cross" and refers to the valley where three streams come together to form a shape similar to a cross, is rustic and a favorite destination for tourists. But don't let the quaint scenery hide the truth...there is a dark side to Valle Crucis.

There's an old stone church (St. John's Episcopal), located along Highway 194 just on the edge of town, where in the churchyard cemetery the supernatural moves among the venerable graves. St. John's was built in the 1860's and the legends of the hellhound and other strange beings have been told for several generations.(pictured)

The traditional story starts on clear moonlit Autumn night. Two young men, who were students at a local college, were driving through the Valle Crucis area when they received the shock of their lives.
They were driving along Highway 195 that leads through Valle Crucis at around midnight. As their car passed the old church, the young men saw a large shadow leap out from behind one of the tombstones in the church graveyard. The shadow leaped into the road in front of them. The driver swerved his car to avoid the shape that suddenly landed in his path. He slammed his foot on the brake and pulled his car over to the shoulder of the road, according to the witnesses' accounts.
Both he and his friend were startled to see that it was a massive dog. It was as tall and big as a fully grown man. The fearsome canine was covered with bristling black fur and had large yellow teeth. And most unusual of all, the dog's eyes were glowing. They were not reflecting back the light like a dog's or cat's eyes will sometimes do. Instead, these eyes were really glowing with a weird red light.

One of the young men turned to the other and asked "Do you see that?" His friend said "No and neither do you."

As the unearthly growling beast walked toward their car, the driver took his foot off the brake and hit the gas. The car roared down the winding mountain road and barely made it along the sharp curves. The driver did his best to control the car as the speedometer reached 60 and then 70 miles an hour.

The driver looked in his rear view mirror and his face turned white from what he saw. The ghostly dog was keeping up with his speeding car. It was even gaining on them.Determined to get away from the nightmarish canine, the driver pushed his accelerator even harder. His car leaped over a bridge just below where the streams meet to form a cross. At that point, the dog stopped following them and vanished from sight.

The two frightened young men drove into Boone and stopped at the local diner, because it was the only place open at that hour. They knew they would not get any sleep that night. They also knew they would never forget the demon dog of Valle Crucis.

Traditionally the tales from this area center around a supernatural canine but there have been other odd sightings including the apparition of a woman near the very same cemetery. There have also been sounds of gunshots and of a female crying. No one has attributed these sounds to any known event but its just another unexplained occurrence typically encountered at the location."
Thank you for the story and picture.

Entire City Appears From Nowhere?

In China an interesting experience puzzles all..

Residents in a Chinese city have been stunned after a giant mirage of a 'ghost city' towered across the skyline.

The apparition appeared earlier this month after heavy rainfall and humid conditions along the Xin'an River in Huanshan City in East China.

Tall buildings, mountains and trees appeared to rise up through the ghostly mist that had descended over the river at dusk. There is usually nothing buy sky across the horizon.

"Amazed residents recorded the footage with some even suggesting that it could have been a 'vortex' to a lost civilisation.

The pictures have baffled experts who visited the city to check that there were not actually any of the building already there.

It is believed that the sight may have been a mirage - a form of illusion that is common in in humid weather..."

Possessed Radio

If you would like to see this including the picture. it is featured at the Coast To Coast AM site.
"Being a long time Coast to Coast AM fan I am familiar with the phenomenon of people looking at clocks and always seeing 11:11, but how would you like waking up to 666 on your clock radio display? The radio worked well for many years and I was very happy with it until one morning. I can't remember the exact program I was listening to but it was something about demons and devils, and the supposed coming of the Antichrist. I cannot tell you the terror I experienced after I fell asleep and woke up to this!

I unplugged the radio that night and moved it immediately to the garage. I had forgotten
all about it until the other day when I was unpacking some old boxes and found it again. It has been unplugged and without batteries for at least a year. Imagine my surprise when I plugged it back in and it still has 666 on the display? I have left the radio plugged in for about a week and ever since this radio has come on at odd times with static but it also will work fine tuning stations except for the display."

Makes One Wonder

Although a believer, when working with psychiatric patients,I never discussed the paranormal.A few of the staff knew of my interest.
One nurse asked me to consult with the staff to develop a treatment plan with a psychotic patient on the locked ward. They were at a loss she said as to what to do with him.

Currently, he was in restraints in a seclusion room.(patients in restraints are placed in locked rooms for their protection from the others on the unit.)We talked for a while. He recounted his belief of being abducted by aliens. He felt the Aliens had implanted a worm in his brain which talked to him and called him "bad" names like "coward" and "loser."They told him he was not suitable for them until he became more assertive"

We talked more about being assertive and a little about what he was doing and thinking before the"abduction"as well as whether the voices ever told him to hurt or kill himself or another.("No.")

He said the aliens did not like him to be here and sis not want him"tied up"However they did want him to take his meds.He said they told him to tell me he needed to be in a room that was not green,"It is not good for my studies" yellow or green would be better, he said.

He had assulted two Police officers and the admitting staff so had been only in this room and in and out of restraints (with injections of meds which were refused by mouth.)He did not know the regular rooms were yellow.
He seemed calmer and mostly lucid during our session. He agreed to take his meds orally from now on and not to hit,but to tell staff if he was getting"upset"He also seemed to understand we needed to trust him with these things so he would have to stay in the room.

That afternoon I met with the sraff. They recalled that the night before and several times that morning he saud the aliens had visited and they did not want him tied up...I discussed not talking about the content of his delusions but try to identify the underlying feeling and speak to that in a way that did not require a response. We agreed to take him out on the ward a few times at least twice a shift, offer his meds by mouth in a matter of fact way.and if all went well move him out of seclusion to a yellow room the next day after the morning team conference. We were all satisfied.

The next morning I filled the Docs and Social Workers in on the plan.(In case they did not read the notes.) The nurses reported he took his meds and went foe walks without incident. He had told the staff the aliens had visited and told him he was being moved yo a yellow room and he would be untied in the morning.

After the meeting the team makes rounds. When we got to his room,he was out of the locked restraints, dressed in his street clothes, and excited to move to his yellow room...When asked how he got his clothes and out of restraints, he said "The Aliens did it....

No one from the staff ever acknowledged that they unlocked his restraints or clothing...

A Hospital Happening

The author would like to know if anyone else experienced this.

"This is my own experience in room 214, second floor of St. Luke's Hospital in Quezon City, Philippines. I was 11 years old when my mother was sent to the hospital. My older brother and I escorted our mother, since our father was at work. We were to stay in room 214. The room that was given to us was a class A room; however, before we got in, my brother told me that we had company. I just ignored it.

At first, it was all fine, until I noticed that every time I woke up the air conditioner was on and the light in the bathroom is off. On our second night, my brother joined me to watch our mom and while we were watching TV, he told me that a lady is in the bathroom, but still I didn't believe him.

I just ignored it until it turned off the light again and then it flushed the toilet. After that night, my brother left at 6:30 a.m. This is the day that the horrible event took place.

It was already midnight when this eerie feeling came over my nerves. I was watching TV and my mom was sleeping when this light earthquake occurred. My mom asked me if there is an earthquake. To make to make her calm I said there wasn't.

Before I was able to ask her to go back to sleep, the room shook very violently. My mom got off the bed and ran to the door. After we got out of the room, we were shocked. The whole second floor was so calm and quiet. We went to the nurse's station and asked them if they felt the earthquake, but all of them got mad at me and told me not to scare my mom and to get back to the room.

But before we got back to the room, one of the janitors told us it was "the lady" and advised us to leave the room. If somebody has also experienced this in room 214, please share it on this site as well."

A NC Happening In A Tree!

This is close to home. They titled it "Lord Of The Rings" but I was not comfortable with that.

"JOYCE KILMER WROTE: ‘ONLY GOD CAN MAKE A TREE’

MIDWAY

Bill Johnson has heard the news stories about people seeing sacred images in unusual objects, such as potato chips, toast or grilled-cheese sandwiches.

He didn’t pay much attention to them, not seeing the images himself.

Which is why Johnson is somewhat bewildered at his discovery of what he says is an image of Jesus on a tree limb that fell in his front yard in Midway.

He said the lichen-covered log bears what appears to be a robed image of Jesus with an outstretched hand. The head is near the center of the limb where the rings of the tree are lighter, giving an almost halo appearance..."

Maybe The Earth Is Unhappy?

Earth crack a mystery
Doug Salewsky and Eileen Heider look at a 200-yard long crack in the earth Tuesday on Birch Creek Road in Menominee County. The crack is 2 to 3 feet wide in some places. The trees in back are tipping about 30 degrees and the earth around the crack has rose about 5 feet with other little fissures spreading out from center. EagleHerald/Rick Gebhard

By MIKE DESOTELL
EagleHerald staff writer

"BIRCH CREEK - One day the land was flat and filled with trees shooting straight into the air. Twenty-four hours later there's a 600-foot-long crack, 4-feet deep twisting its way through the woods - and those vertical trees are now pointed 30 degrees left and right where the earth has mounded 15 feet high. No, it's not a disaster movie; it's what happened Monday at the home of Eileen Heider on Bay de Noc Road in Birch Creek.
Heider was sitting in her recliner watching TV at about 8:30 that morning. "The chair shook for a few seconds and I thought the spring in the chair went," she said. Heider heard a noise at the same time. She checked her chair and around the house inside and out but couldn't find anything unusual.Heider wasn't alone. A neighbor across the road told her she heard a boom while taking a shower and that her husband was leaning against the washing machine and said he felt it move, even though it wasn't running. Another neighbor said he heard a boom and closed his window thinking it was thunder but then noticed the sky was clear.
The next day Heider's friend, Doug Salewski, found a hole in the ground and a 200-yard crevasse a short ways away which wasn't there before. Heider went to investigate and said the crack was three-feet wide and about five-feet deep in spots.
"The trees on one side are kind of tilted and on the other side are tilted the opposite way," she said. The hole found by her friend was dry so she didn't think it was caused by rain, even though some members of her family did. "My kids and different ones that came over said maybe it was because of so much rain and there was a buildup of pressure underneath."
Heider call authorities and Michigan State Trooper Paul Anderson from the Stephenson Post came out to take a look..."

Did Their Pet Return As A Rock?

This was interesting!
"Looking out of the window, Mark Brow couldn’t believe it when he saw his dog, Looby Loo, sitting in her favourite spot in the garden.

After all, she had died two years ago.

But there, hewn into a garden rock, was the unmistakable image of the 13-year-old springer spaniel.

t first, he thought it was a trick of the light. Then he looked suspiciously at his drink.

But Looby Loo, the beloved family pet his children missed so much, was still there.

Mr Brow, a programme controller at a local radio station, said his wife, Carron, first alerted him to the ghostly visitor in the garden at their home in Ilkley, Yorkshire.

‘She said, “I think you’d better look out of the window. It’s Looby Loo”. Initially I thought it was a cardboard cut-out, and they were winding me up,’ he said.

But close examination showed patterns in the moss covering the rock, which came from Ilkley Moor and has been in the garden for years, had suddenly formed
the image.

‘I just thought I was seeing things, but she’s there,’ said Mr Brow, 42. ‘It doesn’t just look like any dog, it looks like our dog.

'The bizarre thing is that spot is exactly where she used to sit.’
Mr Brow, who has four children, Harry, 13, Louis, ten, Charles, eight, and Lillia, four, said : ‘The kids are desperate for a dog and have been pestering me for ages.

‘Perhaps this is a sign we should get one.’"

So Where Is He?

Several people in New Jersey claimed they saw a person falling from the sky with no parachute, but an extensive police search has turned up no evidence, NBC Philadelphia reported.

Witness Kelly Hale and two of her co-workers at Shore Veterinarians in Egg Harbor Township said they watched from their office windows as a human fell head-first from the sky on Tuesday.

But there were no reports of missing skydivers.

The police are still investigating. One of the many who called in to report it said
"They better hurry up tjere is a guy out there somewhere..

Mysterious Moving Rocks

A group of young scientists is taking a crack at solving the puzzle of this odd desert area known as Racetrack Playa.

Most of the wandering stones are about the size of a one-liter soda bottle and far heavier, according to Brian Jackson, a NASA scientist who has been studying the area for more than four years.

"You don't expect 20-pound (9-kilogram) rocks to go sliding across the ground very easily, but they seem to do that on occasion," Jackson said.

Jackson said crackpot theories abound to explain the stones' travels across the playa (a term for a dried-out lake bed), which is about 3 miles (4.5 kilometers) long, almost a mile and a half (2 km) across, and preternaturally flat.

"I've definitely heard aliens, magnetic fields, frat boys from UNLV" — the University of Nevada, Las Vegas — "but nothing really plausible," Jackson said. "There's no way it could really be a hoax, because if someone were pushing them you'd see footprints."

He Believes Friday the 13th Is Unlucky

This young man in the recent news article is likely to think Friday The 13th is unlucky for the rest of his life..
" For some people 13 is an unlucky number.

St John Ambulance volunteers improved the luck of a 13-year-old boy when they treated him after he was struck by lightning - at 13:13 on Friday 13.

The boy was struck at Lowestoft Seafront Air Festival today, Firday 13th, and it was only while the ambulance team was treating him that they noticed the time - 1.13pm.

The unnamed buy suffered a minor burn and was taken to James Paget Hospital, where he is expected to make a full recovery."

The Flying Dog?

This is interesting to Dog lovers...
" A Hungarian dog has been reunited with his owners after being sucked into the sky still in his kennel by the wind from a huge storm.

Agnes Tamas, 57, said she had chained her dog who she has renamed Lucky to the dog house when he was swept away by what she described as the worst storm anyone in her village of Gesztered can remember.

She said: "I saw the roofs of the local houses being ripped off one by one, and I ran into my garden to try and get to the cellar.

"I couldn't believe it when the dog house flew up into the air - complete with my dog cowering inside.

"It was like something out of the wizard of Oz."

Lucky was eventually found 20 miles away after local radio reported an appeal for him to be traced. The dog house and the chain however had vanished.

Kalman Csutor who found Lucky and called the Red Cross said: "He was pretty shaken - I have no idea what happened to the dog house or whether the wind carried him all that way - but when i found him he was 20 miles from home."

Something Missing?

This appeared ib Stephen Wagners Newsletter. What do you think?

"When something you need disappears, try asking the crows for help

There are many stories on this website about the "borrower" phenomenon, or disappearing object phenomenon (DOPler effect). In these cases, a commonly used object goes missing and the owner searches in vain for it everywhere. Then later - sometimes hours, sometimes days or even weeks later - the object inexplicably reappears, either in an obvious spot that had been searched before, or in some impossible location.

In the report below, S.D. Geiger gives us a Native American twist on the phenomenon with a tradition that asks the crows to return the missing object. In myth and lore, the crow is a symbol of mystery, magic, prophecy, creation, cunning and trickery. They earned these attributes, at least in part, because of their mischievous nature: crows like to steal shiny objects. And that might explain why asking the crows to return a missing object makes sense - they might have taken it!

According to Native American Totems and Their Meanings, the crow symbolizes "justice, shape shifting, change, creativity, spiritual strength, energy, community sharing, and balance." And Native American Animal Symbols - Who are They, What do They Mean and Why characterizes the crow as "a carrier of souls from darkness into light and guards against fear in the dark; also a shapeshifter; keeper of spiritual law; likes to steal shiny bright objects; always a clown. Look for the bright and shiny aspects of life."

So does asking the crows work? Here is S.D. Geiger's story....

IT WAS THE summer of 2009, where the west coast of Vancouver Island felt tropical in heat waves. I went to a Cree Sweat Lodge led by my trusted mentor, whom I had known for years. I was now the fire tender for his lodges. I was surprised to see a different couple come to the lodge this time; surprised by the fact they were both skinny, pale, covered in tattoos, and they were obviously skeptical about native culture.

Now I must note that I knew my mentor was a very powerful man; however, I always had doubts because his arrogance, as sometimes he became cocky and would attempt tricks of magic to prove he was powerful. This is exactly what I was thinking as soon as he said, "Aho aho, the great spirits have just told me that someone here lost their keys." As soon as I heard that I was thinking, "What the ----?" The new couple were scared and yelling, "Oh my god! That is so weird because this morning we just lost our house keys! This is freaky! What is going on?"

I was just as confused as they were. I had no idea what was going on, and I was the fire tender! What I did know was that my mentor would have a splendid time getting a jolt out of some random skeptics. I decided to play along with it, not believing anything he said.

CROW DELIVERS

Aho," he continued, "if you just ask Crow to help you find your keys, he will do what you ask. Just remember..." his voice deepened with mystery for his climax, "to thank Crow generously after." It was so odd. I knew my mentor had a fun personality and liked to mess around now and then, but I knew he would never stoop to the level of stealing someone's keys. Besides, he had been busy with preparing ceremony for the day before and all day that day, and my eyes had been on him the whole time - but I was still considering that. Even if it was true that crows would help locate lost objects, I still found it odd that anything spiritual should be based on material objects in the first place.

Later that same day, I decided to attend an evening movie. I accidentally stumbled upon the same odd couple from the sweat lodge earlier. I was just as shocked as they were when we noticed we were standing in the same line waiting for popcorn. They stampeded into me with wide eyes, talking loudly. They told me they were afraid and shocked because once they had returned home, their house keys were just laying perfectly sprawled out on their table. "Needless to say, we did thank Crow a lot after that!" they told me. The frightened couple giggled.

I still wasn't convinced. Maybe my mentor did steal their keys and somehow miraculously made it to their house before they arrived? I tried to make sense of it, no matter how little sense my reasoning was."

Purple Snow In Russia

Although it is well known that purple is my favorite color,it would be most alarming to see this.

"Southern Russia overwhelmed with purple snow
permalinke-mail story to a friendprint version

Published 09 March, 2010, 22:43

Edited 12 March, 2010, 12:48

The very morning following the widely celebrated Woman's Day - people in Southern Russia could not believe their eyes when they found purple snow piled on city streets.

Scientists confirmed a multi-coloured snowfall – ranging from light purple to brown – had landed in Russia's Stavropol Region.

Having analysed the samples, climatologists ruled that the snow is perfectly safe. However, eating purple snow is still not recommended as scientists say it is full of dust from Africa.

A massive dust cyclone rose to upper atmosphere layers and then mixed with regular snow clouds in Russia's South.

So, as a matter of fact, purple snow was an expeditious shipping of African sand beaches to Stavropol region. If it was not for negative temperatures, its residents could already be having sand-bathes.

A similar incident took place some years ago in Russia's Far East."

Cat Senses Spirit

Derek told about strange experiences he had while living in a house in Saginaw, Michigan. On one night, Derek said he heard footsteps around his bed and remembers his cat, Isis, letting out a horrifying screech at whatever might have been in the room. About three months later, Derek claims to have seen his am/fm radio levitate, as if it had been picked up by a spirit. He said the cat would not go back into the room after that.

Thanks Derek not sure if I would either after the radio thing...

Texas Couple Say "Holy Egg" Came To Them

Wow!
"There's a different type of story out of Burleson this holiday season. A couple in the city, 13 miles south of Fort Worth, believes God has given them a divine sign and it's a message spelled out in the most unusual of places.

Tracy and Pam Norrell are calling it a miracle, a gift laid before them on their small farm.

Tracy went to gather the eggs from the chicken coop Monday night, as he does every day. But this time one egg in particular caught his eye.

Unlike the others, this egg isn't smooth and a very noticeable cross is indented on the top.

The Norell's say the egg was laid 'straight from heaven' and is a message of encouragement that comes at the right time.

"This time of the year, we get so taken up with the presents and money and we forget about the reason," Pam explained. "I think he [God] was just telling us he is the reason for the season."

Islamic Stigmata

This is not a Halloween ghost tale, but an interesting article I found yesterday.

",,, In the meantime I've been interested in the baby in Dagestan who is apparently running a sort of Koranic slide show on his skin. Ali Yakubov is said to have exhibited the word 'Allah' in Arabic on his chin at a few weeks of age, and subsequently entire Koranic verses have been appearing on various parts of his body, before fading and being replaced with new ones. Initially the parents did not talk about it, but then the phrase, "Show these signs to people" came into view, and now their household is being inundated with pilgrims from all over the region. Performances are twice weekly, on Mondays and Thursday nights.

There are a few other details. The child is said to have been diagnosed with coronary heart disease and cerebral spastic infantile paralysis at birth, but he recovered suddenly when the scripts started appearing on his body. When this happens, his mother says, he cries, his temperature rises and he seems to be very uncomfortable. The parents themselves are not particularly religious, but the local muftis are all aflutter and maintain the event is a "warning to all Muslims of Russia and Dagestan ... that they should turn to the wisdom of the religion of Allah, repent of their sins, and abandon their discord, conflicts, and the fratricidal confrontation that today shakes the blessed land of Dagestan and the entire Caucasus."...
